HMH Books for Young Readers, Franchise seeks a talented and enthusiastic Designer to join their nimble, creative team. The Designer will report to the Art Director and is responsible for following through with the creative vision for high-end, character-driven and branded children’s picture books, board books, novelty books, backlist re-issues, and chapter books. The Designer sees assigned projects through the design process, including research and concept development, preliminary design, approval and refinement, preparing files for print production, and making reprint edits to existing books.


The Designer performs the following duties:

  • Create cover and interior designs for print books and packaging
  • Bring continuity to established HMH brands including Curious George, Carmen Sandiego, and Little Blue Truck 
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to develop market-responsive books
  • Research, conceptualize, and develop book concepts from sketch to final print product
  • As assigned by Art Director, discover new talent and manage illustrators in the creation of cover and interior artwork
  • Work closely with the Art Director to prepare materials for acquisition and cover approval meetings
  • Adhere to budget and scope of work as determined by Art Director
  • Maintain the book schedule to ensure key marketing and sales dates are met


Job requirements:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in print publishing, children’s product design, or related field
  • Formal education or extensive continuing education in graphic design
  • A graphic design portfolio displaying excellent typography and information design. Experience with page layout, book cover design, and children’s product or packaging strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and timely and efficient follow-up
  • Ability to juggle multiple, varied projects from those in early development, to preparing final files for print
  • A highly collaborative work style, with the ability to interact positively and effectively with both in-house and freelance teams
  • Expert Mac user with proven Adobe Creative Suite skills, including Photoshop and InDesign
  • A solid understanding of image editing, retouching, color correction, and prepress file setup


Physical requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing)
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a printer
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
  • Cut, trim, and build paper prototypes and dummies by hand
