The Opportunity – Director, Solution Delivery, Sales & Services 


The Director, Solution Delivery is a key new position reporting directly to the IT SVP, Marketing & Communications and Sales & Services. With responsibility for directing all aspects of technology solution delivery, this role will play a pivotal role in HMH’s digital transformation by establishing and operationalizing an array of Sales & Services technology capabilities. You’ll be part of a fast growing team charged with creating and supporting the marketing technology infrastructure at HMH.

The successful candidate will be a clear and decisive communicator with outstanding organizational management and business technology acumen. This director will have outstanding management skills and will be adept at cultivating and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of parties including internal stakeholders, 3rd - party vendors, external clients, and operational areas within HMH. This includes working with the business partners and stakeholders to understand the business processes, priorities and current risks and issues. The candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, judgment, integrity, and leadership. This position will be located in Boston, MA and may require 20% travel to business partner locations.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leverage understanding of solution delivery best practices to build strong partnerships with business and technical development teams, in Boston, Dublin, other US locations and off-shore.
  • Lead, manage and mentor a team of developers, system Admins and Technical analysts staff.
  • Maintain current understanding of Sales & Services technology landscape, with an emphasis on emerging technologies
  • Work closely with the IT SVP, Marketing & Communications and Sales & Services to ensure that business priorities are understood and addressed by the solution delivery strategy, technologies, operating model and project plans.
  • Partner with Architecture and Operations Enablement leadership and other cross functional staff to define and operationalize standards and processes that increasingly mature Build and Run functions, including work intake processes, release management processes, code reviews, etc.
  • Partner with Solution Management resources to establish solution and project governance, ensuring appropriate IT resourcing and alignment with near and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Identify and resolve issues/events that could affect organizational strategy, resources, schedule, budget, scope and/or deadline.
  • Model and drive a team culture that fosters learning, initiative, quality, and innovation.


Skills & Experience

  • Integrity – By reputation and consistent performance, they must be viewed by the executive team as trustworthy, and by other levels of the organization as fair and trusted member of the IT team.
  • Emotional stability and resilience – In the creation of a mature technology service organization, this role will be accountable to various business and technology resources and must consistently demonstrate a calm and assured demeanor
  • BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an IT related technical discipline or equivalent work experience
  • 10+ years relevant, progressive experience managing technology projects and solutions/service delivery, including day-to-day oversight of solution architects, developers, technical analysts, QA & testing resources, etc.
  • Demonstrated success managing large aspects of an Enterprise CRM and related Engagement Services technologies and projects
  • Experience overseeing enterprise digital transformation initiatives including process and standards development
  • Hands on experience as a technology project manager, SFDC Admin and/or Developer.


Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing)
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
