Senior Solutions Strategist, Marketing Technology

The Senior Solutions Strategist is a key position reporting directly to the VP, Marketing and Communications IT. HMH IT is evolving its organization, and this new position will play a pivotal role in establishing IT as a strategic business partner that understands, enables, and improves core business strategy, processes, and operations through technology solution design and delivery. We are looking for an exceptional Solutions Strategy Manager to partner with business and IT leadership to identify the business-critical capabilities and work with the officer team to build the strategy and roadmap that brings them to bear. In addition, this role will represent a crucial junction between strategy and day-to-day solution management process.


The successful candidate must have deep understanding of the marketing business function, operational processes, and application landscape. They will have outstanding skills in analysis, verbal and written communication, with the ability to drive clarity and consensus around the technology vision and roadmap. They must be able to understand and translate for business and technology counterparts the impacts of current and future plans on the longer term vision.  In order to be effective, the candidate must have the ability to quickly build effective working relationships with business and technical teams across multiple locations. This position will be located in Boston, MA and may require 20% travel to business partner locations.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leverage deep understanding of marketing technology best practices to build strong partnerships with business and technical development teams, in Boston, Dublin, other US locations and off-shore.
  • Direct strategic analysis and planning across business technology stakeholders to enable development of a mature, capability-centric technology service organization
  • Leverage knowledge of application landscape and field research analysis to conduct maturity modeling to benchmark progression toward desired technical capabilities
  • Design and develop strategic planning narratives to facilitate consensus building across marketing and technology teams, and beyond to related business functions (e.g., sales, product)
  • Define and socialize strategic plans and technology capability roadmaps
  • Work with solution managers and architecture team to ensure deliverables (e.g., Requirements, Story Backlog, Process Maps, Specifications, Test Plans, Deployment Plans, Adoption Plans, etc.) align with strategic plans and roadmaps
  • Identify issues/events that could affect strategic alignment, resources, schedule, budget, scope and/or deadline; organize, summarize and escalate issues to appropriate parties for resolution
  • Partner with Solution Manager and Director, Solution Delivery to establish strategic governance for work intake and management.
  • Drive quality through adherence to and supporting project management processes and procedures, including the maintenance of documentation on shared file systems
  • Ensure change management plans are in place where necessary to ensure successful adoption and scaling of solutions.
  • Mentor BA/Solution Management resources


Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an IT related technical discipline or equivalent work experience in a complex business technology environment
  • Demonstrates leadership, sound judgment, initiative, efficiency, productivity, attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • 10+ years career BA/PM focus on web design and development, web content management, web analytics, eCommerce, email campaign management, lead generation, events management, asset management, etc.
  • 10+ years experience authoring written artifacts, with proven ability to take high-level ideas, strategies and ambiguous objectives and translate them into clear strategic communications for multi-level audiences
  • 8+ years’ experience in the delivery of large-scale technology projects with deep familiarity with SDLC/project management methodologies (waterfall and agile), including primary accountability for accurate business, functional and technical requirements
  • Strong project management skills, including experience managing project plans, identifying and escalating dependencies, risks, and issues.
  • Experience leading complex initiatives with cross-functional teams (including virtual teams)
  • Desire and willingness to lead and mentor more junior team members.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to drive structured problem solving and solutions across broad stakeholder groups
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to question thought partners across functional areas.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal & written)


Physical Requirements:

Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing)

The person in this position needs to move about inside office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc

Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer

Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
