The Learning Scientist will support the Learning Sciences, Measurement & Analytics department which consists of a multidisciplinary team that supports a holistic approach toward learning and performance in education. The department includes staff with expertise in the learning sciences, education, measurement, and data mining. This expertise is leveraged in action-oriented research and projects in support of the HMH mission and in consulting with internal and external customers. The insights gained from efficacy research and data analytics are used in designing and researching products and services maximizing the likelihood of meaningfully impacting the lives of students and teachers. The team provides solutions by developing innovative approaches that help internal and external customers achieve their teaching, learning, and assessment goals despite practical barriers and limitations. 
The Learning Scientist (LS) will utilize a deep understanding of learning principles, learning facilitation, and learner-centered activities to influence and support the development of online and blended learning programs in Reading and Humanities that utilize computer-adaptive testing, formative assessments, and recommendation engines to provide content-based learning materials in support of personalized learning. The LS will analyze and evaluate program-based data from teachers, students, and human-computer interactions to provide insights on course design, instructional content, and delivery methods which are appropriate for a variety of learners and learning contexts. The LS will conduct research utilizing appropriate methodologies to guide product development and evaluate effectiveness of programs and services. The LS will and report on and present findings to a variety of audiences to advance HMH’s position as a learning company. The LS will work collaboratively across business areas to define and support the creation of a data feedback loop to inform data-driven decision-making throughout the product development life cycle.
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide expert guidance on the development or adaptation of course design, instructional content and delivery methods appropriate for a variety of learner characteristics (e.g., different ability levels, mindset, or motivational states) and learning contexts based on analysis and evaluation of student activity and performance, online instructional program logs, and teacher feedback.
Conduct design-based research, educational data mining, computational modeling of interactions or learning analytics to develop or adapt learning content or delivery modes. Analyze performance data to determine effectiveness of instructional systems, courses, or instructional materials. Develop measurement tools to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction or training interventions. Research and evaluate emerging instructional technologies or methods. Report research results to a variety of audiences to highlight the meaningfulness of learning sciences in the product development life cycle and the desired outcomes of programs and platforms. Attend and present on the HMH strategic initiatives at regional and national conferences.
Work across business areas to influence and support the creation of a data feedback loop as part of the product development life cycle in support of data-driven decision-making. Work across business areas to build an efficient system for producing periodic efficacy reports for customers and the market utilizing programmatic data.
Create and implement a process for developing and maintaining student profiles and effective learning pathways utilizing insights gained from instructional program logs, student activity logs, and student performance. 
 
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
• Master's Degree in learning sciences, cognitive science in education, interdisciplinary education research, computer science, educational psychology
• 2+ years of experience in a Learning Sciences (or related) position
• Expert knowledge in a field related to the learning sciences: cognition, education psychology, human computer interaction, instructional design, etc.
• Expert knowledge of learning in formal and informal contexts
• Deep knowledge of the role of technology in the support of learning
• Ability to provide sound instructional design consulting services to subject-matter experts. 
• Ability to work with a high volume of learning content for multiple projects while being flexible and adaptable, performing multiple tasks concurrently. 
• Adept at being creative, flexible, and innovative in solution design. 
• Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong research design, analysis, reporting, and problem-solving skills
• Successful history communicating technical information and key ideas to lay and scholarly audiences.
• Ability to work in a collaborative team and maintain effective relationships in a matrixed organization.
• Strong attention to detail and a feeling of pride and ownership over the quality of HMH research-based products and student- and teacher-facing applications.
• Proactively seeks opportunities to innovate; embraces continuous improvement efforts.
• Ability to analyze and model large data utilizing SAS, SPSS, R, Python, etc.
• Facility with Microsoft products
Preferred:
• Ph.D. in learning sciences 
• English/humanities or related specialization
• 2+ years’ experience in learning engineering, learning experience design, instructional design, or related field
• Experience with complex projects
• Deep knowledge of and experience with assessments and testing (particularly formative assessment systems) 
• Experience with designing learning environments. 
• Proven ability to lead projects, including cost, resource, and schedule management as well as compliance and reporting.

Physical Requirements:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
• Must be able to travel up to  20%
