The Opportunity - Senior Developer

 

As a Senior Developer, Digital Production & Strategy, you are responsible directing production development teams who are mostly off-shore. The Senior Developer is a key contributor to the designing, documenting, supporting and implementing of front-end web development and continuous integration tools on a Production scale. Senior Developers bring a strong technical web and mobile background with the ability to deliver software across numerous platforms. The Senior Developer has capabilities in coding, with solid problem-solving skills and also has the ability to communicate, enthusiastically, clearly and concisely to other developers within the larger team as well as other HMH functional leads.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and take ownership for the technical development project/program delivery of component design, development and maintenance
  • Support the defining, validating, and communicating of the technology/technical standards used to develop HMH products.
  • Work with vendor teams sharing knowledge and development best practices and overseeing technical tasks and deliverables
  • Establish and lead POCs to illustrate and drive decision-making around technical approaches to customer-facing content/tools, authoring, and delivery
  • Support and steer development teams in understanding and implementing technical strategy around EPUB, modular content, or third-party learning management systems and reader delivery
  • Guide development partners in conjunction with our development best practice standards to deliver projects
  • Lead/direct problem-solving/triaging technical issues that arise as needed
  • Work collaboratively within a cross-functional, agile development team to solve problems, deliver incrementally, transfer knowledge and contribute to overall product architecture
  • Contribute to the technical delivery of component design, development and maintenance
  • Adopt an Operational Excellence approach to continuous improvement - test, analyse data and improve constantly
  • Understand HMH goals around quality and software development discipline, participate in code reviews at the team level
  • Communicate progress clearly and concisely to the development team

     

 

Educational Qualifications/Certifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or Multimedia, or comparable industry experience

 

Requirements:

  • 4+ years software development experience across different industry domains
  • A minimum of 1 years proven leadership/management experience of technical teams from a resource management and technical team management perspective
  • Proven front end proficiency in developing Web Applications in JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with fluency in English essential
  • Knowledge of software development methodologies (Agile/Scrum/Kanban/Test Driven Development)
  • Strong appreciation of User Experience (UX) best practice
  • Ability to advise other developers on software deliveries from early conceptual stage through to completion
  • Skilled in delivering quality products using latest technologies such as HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3
  • Experience in Node JS an advantage
  • Proven knowledge of Responsive Design principles
  • Proven understanding of project tracking and Agile development methodologies
  • Ability to work under short deadlines and co-ordinate development schedules
  • Must be able to work with a team of developers (both internal and external) on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience using Test Driven Development and testing frameworks
  • Good knowledge of process automation engineering such as Gulp, Grunt etc.
  • Good knowledge of Version Control Systems (GIT, Subversion etc.)
  • Likes to turn ideas into code, and making that code usable by your teammates, and the company at scale
  • Aware of Accessibility, Internationalization and Security criteria for modern Web development and best practices
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with fluency in English essential

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
