Purpose of the Role:

The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on coding role; working as part of a cross-functional team; alongside other developers, Designers and Quality Engineers, within an agile development environment. We’re working on the development of next generation e-Learning solutions utilising the latest in web technologies. The Senior Engineer is responsible for designing, documenting, supporting and implementing front-end applications, with a key focus on ‘Ed’, our new eLearning platform which is developed in React. We’re seeking candidates with advanced coding capabilities, with solid problem-solving skills and with the ability to communicate enthusiastically, clearly and concisely to other engineers within the larger team as well as with other HMH functional teams.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Contribute to the technical leadership and collective ownership for the technical delivery of component design, development and maintenance
  • Initiate and manage Code Reviews
  • Adopt an Operational Excellence approach to continuous improvement - test, analyse data and improve constantly
  • Proven understanding of project tracking and Agile development methodologies
  • Weekly Reporting to Engineering Management
  • Work collaboratively within a cross-functional, agile development team to solve problems, transfer knowledge and contribute to overall product architecture

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Multimedia or comparable industry experience 
  • 5+ years software development experience across different industry domains and experience using React JS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with fluency in English essential
  • Knowledge of modern agile software development methodologies (i.e. Kanban, Scrum, Test Driven Development)
  • Fantastic at turning ideas into code, and making that code usable by your teammates, and the company at scale
  • Skilled in delivering quality products using latest web technologies; this is a hands-on coding role with all that entails
  • Proven knowledge of Responsive Design principles
  • Ability to work under short deadlines and co-ordinate development deliverables
  • Must be able to work within a team of developers (both internal and external) 
  • Experience using testing frameworks 
  • Knowledge of design patterns including MVC, Singleton, Module etc.
  • Aware of Accessibility, Internationalisation and Security criteria for modern web development
  • Git flow experience and software development lifecycle including Rapid Prototyping, Continuous Integration
  • Appreciation for UX best practice and an understanding of basic iXD principles

Preferred:

  • Experience with ECMAScript 6
  • Good knowledge of process automation engineering such as GRUNT, YEOMAN or similar
  • Good knowledge of unit testing frameworks such as Testing JS, Jasmine, Mocha, Handlebar
  • Experience in e-Learning standards (e.g. SCORM, Common Cartridge, xAPI, EPUB)
  • Experience in working with Learning Management Systems and integrating with platform-side APIs
  • Mobile development experience (iOS, Android and Windows)
