The position will report to the Head of Internal Audit and manage all aspects of HMH’s Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance program, including scoping and planning, control testing, internal and external communications, and project monitoring and reporting. The Director will work closely with internal audit staff, Executive Leadership, our co-source Deloitte team, and our external audit firm, PwC. This role will help develop and deliver stakeholder value by driving operational and process improvement within our SOX processes and rationalizing IT and business process controls. The position will also assist on cross-functional operational improvement projects and committees to add value, drive improvement, and help HMH achieve its transformational goals.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manages HMH’s SOX program and presents the project status to Executive Leadership and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors
  • Act as the system administrator for AuditBoard, HMH’s compliance platform tool
  • Collaborates with our PwC external audit team to ensure timely and efficient completion of SOX testing to ensure maximum reliance
  • Manages our co-sourced Deloitte team that assists with SOX control design, evaluation, and operating effectiveness testing
  • Helps develop and deliver training programs to improve internal control knowledge and governance.
  • Evaluates control deficiencies and works with stakeholders on remediation
  • Identifies leading practices focused on streamlining and improving SOX processes and partners with business leaders to implement enhancements
  • Builds long-term relationships with senior management to understand HMH’s culture and ensure alignment with organizational goals    

 

Must Have:

  • 10+ years of work experience at an external audit firm or within Internal Audit at publicly traded companies working on SOX compliance and operational reviews
  • CPA or CIA designation required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related discipline
  • Exceptional project management and executive presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Experience managing, coaching, and developing staff
  • Extensive knowledge of US GAAP and Sarbanes Oxley compliance requirements
  • Strong computer skills and advanced Excel experience
  • Self-motivated team player with a positive attitude

 

Nice to Have: 

  • PMP certification
  • Big 4 accounting firm experience
  • Experience presenting to a Company’s Board of Directors
  • Experience with AuditBoard

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
