VP Strategic Sourcing and Contracts

HMH is looking for a dynamic Vice President of Strategic Sourcing and Contracts to lead our negotiations and procurement  strategy for development of K-12 curriculum content.  This position will be remote until spring 2021, and then transition to an HMH office in Orlando FL, Round Rock TX or Boston MA.  The Vice President, Strategic Sourcing and Contracts is responsible for implementing and overseeing the execution of HMH’s supplier partnerships, vendor relationships and author contracting agreements to support our award-winning curriculum. The right candidate will have extensive experience in negotiations, sourcing, and legal protections for intellectual property by overseeing high profile, complex programs with multiple dependencies, delivering them on time and within budget. The right candidate will also possess professional and executive gravitas with a successful track record of outside in strategic viewpoints while driving newer digital first best in class approaches.


The successful candidate will:


  • Strategic Direction for Sourcing and Contracts. Direct the development of business strategies and implementation of standards for best Contract Management and Sourcing operations. Define and drive continual process improvement and automation of business processes. Ensure alignment with HMH strategy around diverse and inclusive vendor/supplier/author selection.
  • High Quality and Mitigate Risk. Ensure enterprise-wide needs for supplier due diligence, quality output, risk assessment, and continuous supplier monitoring are being accomplished. Ensure risk mitigation to any contractual intellectual property terms, licensing, permissions, royalties, and related obligations. Serves as a point of escalation for problem-solving
  • Negotiation and Budget Management: Exhibits excellent negotiation skills; define and streamline superior supplier-pricing methodologies. Leads team in meeting overall 100% adherence to capital budgets, and all financial terms and capital planning requirements. Exhibits high level of knowledge of industry best practices in contract negotiation and cost containment/savings strategies.
  • Manage People and Performance: Highly experienced in leading, building, and managing high-performance teams through coaching and mentorship in a strong matrix environment. Oversees and manages personal and career development for expert teams of sourcing and contracts professionals. Exceptional people-leading skills. Provides necessary resources, proactively support removing of obstacles to team success and accomplishments.
  • Customer Success Focus: Uses functional expertise, best practice communication, and leadership skills to manage complex relationships and influence positive change. Resolves escalated supplier- or contract-related issues. Drives the importance of quality and accuracy with internal and external stakeholders at every stage of the development process..


The right candidate will need the following qualifications: 

  • A BS/BA in a related field or Equivalent work experience and 15+ years of progressive management experience in related industry or functional area. A minimum of 10 years of relevant job experience
  • Be a highly skilled communicator. Verbal and written communication must be professional, comprehensive, clear, direct, and accurate. Must demonstrate expertise in educating and communicating practices and processes to internal and external stakeholders, with a proven background in creating and modeling change.
  • Able to build and maintain lasting cooperative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and leverages relationships to meet organizational objectives within functional framework. Must have demonstrated success in leading direct reports and non-direct reports through influence.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and knowledge of content/product development lines of business, strategic functions such as finance, legal, TSG, corporate partnerships, and proven experience collaborating with these cross-discipline teams.
  • Strong people-leading skills, with demonstrated ability to influence, develop, coach, and provide support effectively in a matrix environment, working with large cross-functional, multifaceted teams
  • Demonstrates initiative and innovation to successfully lead process improvement efforts, to develop and motivate staff to implement change, to problem solve effectively, and to successfully address changing business conditions.
  • Experience interpreting and implementing legal guidelines and policies; making decisions that incorporate sound contractual/legal principles that protect the integrity of HMH assets and intellectual property rights.  Functional expert in publishing, contracts, licensing and sourcing processes.
  • Establishes a comprehensive understanding of edtech/publishing industry business practices, and guides company management in setting policies and strategies to anticipate the company's future business needs with a clear understanding of associated contractual/legal and/or financial risk.
  • Possess the vision to anticipate changes in industry and translate potential changes to strategies to position HMH for success. Must be able to establish and execute strategies that support company objectives. Must achieve revenue, delivery, and expense targets.

Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
