Role summary: The Production Editor is responsible for implementing/monitoring the complete editorial production of print and digital projects from manuscript through final file release, ensuring that projects meet author/editorial/marketing vision in addition to quality, budget, and schedule expectations. Creates/monitors production schedules; manages production workflow with authors, editors, freelancers, marketing, and manufacturing; and reviews, routes, and prepares final releases to manufacturing. Archives final files as per protocol. Hires and oversees freelancers.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plans, implements, and monitors the complete prepress and production for assigned titles.
  • Works closely with Editorial, Marketing, and Manufacturing to identify and meet project, author, and market needs, schedules and budgets.
  • Develops professional and effective working relationships with authors; interpreting all stages of production processes for them; evaluating, integrating, and communicating their feedback.
  • Creates and monitors production schedules to meet publication dates; oversees production workflow with authors, editors, freelancers, marketing, and manufacturing; reviews, routes, and prepares for final release text and cover files to manufacturing; and reviews and routes all stages of proof through publication.
  • Prepares and solicits competitive composition and prepress (designers, copyeditors, proofreaders, outside production management services, illustrators, photographers, translators) project bids; assigns and communicates project specifications to outside vendors and negotiates fees; originates and tracks vendor contracts and purchase orders.
  • Schedules and facilitates cross-functional cover and text design concept meetings, assigns and liaisons with appropriate freelance and in-house designers, presents design sketches to in-house book team and authors, and communicates revisions as needed to designer. Work closely with Design Director and book team to ensure fullest content support through design development, planning, and implementation.
  • Works with manufacturing print buyer to create, develop, and refine project cost estimates, based on budget goals developed with and communicated to book teams and managers; approves, codes, and routes supplier invoices; provides accurate final costs within the month of publication; distributes complimentary copies to approved list.
  • Coordinates with video and technology developers and producers; coordinates for design consistent with print product; oversees schedules and overall project development.
  • Ensures accurate, timely, and thorough communications regarding project design/content across functional areas; retrieves/archives assets according to protocol; updates databases and content/design files; posts files to internal and external channels (e.g., Amazon) as needed.  Provides monthly status reports.
  • Provides production support including copyediting, proofreading, and layout/design consultation to marketing group for catalogs/promotional material and across the company as needed.
  • Stays current with market and industry trends, developments, and technologies by participating in workshops and seminars and by reading professional literature.
  • Assists Production Director and others in department as needed.


Education level: Bachelor’s degree.


Knowledge and skills:

  •  3+ years of experience in the editorial production of books, preferably in the educational market.
  • Thorough knowledge of book publication process required.
  • Excellent team-player, people, communication, copyediting, proofreading, and project management skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
  • Must have an exceptional eye for detail and be a creative problem-solver.
  • Occasional travel to conferences.


Technology/Software Skills:

  • Fluency with Excel and Microsoft Word required (cross-platform a plus).
  • Experience with Adobe Suite applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and with a spectrum of file delivery formats and procedures (.tiff, .jpg, .pdf, FTP, markup language, etc.) strongly preferred.


Physical Requirements

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
