Senior Production Designer

HMH Books & Media is looking for a full-time Senior Production Designer. The Senior Production Designer will be responsible for interior design and typesetting of assigned titles, including many speed-to-market titles. Other responsibilities include designing photo inserts, designing spine dies, typesetting of additional titles, entering corrections, setting up paperback interiors, preflighting files, managing art packages for assigned titles, designing selling materials (covers and interiors), and hiring and managing freelancers. The ability to collaborate across departments, make compromises when needed, be flexible, and be willing to do what is best for each book is essential.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Interior design and typesetting (composition) of assigned front list titles.
  • Designing/layout of photo inserts
  • Typesetting and entering corrections
  • Setting up paperback interiors
  • Managing art packages
  • Designing selling materials
  • Preflighting interior and cover files
  • Working with freelancers

 

Experience and Skills Required

  • Minimum of three years’ work experience in book design or production
  • Exceptional knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
  • Strong ability to evaluate art files for print.
  • Knowledge of preflighting PDFs for print
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent judgment regarding schedules, priorities, and tradeoffs, and the ability to communicate about these matters.
  • Great time management and prioritizing skills

 

The ideal candidate would be located in or near Boston. 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls and online meetings.
