Senior Product Designer

You are an energetic creative, ready to make an impact in the highly competitive and evolving educational technology market. As an HMH Product Designer, you collaborate in an agile environment within high performing, cross-functional teams to define the needs of students and teachers and create and validate effective digital solutions. You have a passion for User Centered Design and a love of problem solving. You bring exquisite visual design solutions informed by current and emerging design trends and technologies to create digital experiences that engage, surprise, and delight users of all ages. In your role as Product Designer, you and a scrum team of information architects, front-end designers and engineers will work through all phases of Design Thinking methodology within an iterative development model–through discovery and research, ideation, rapid prototyping, testing, and delivery.

 

Responsibilities:

 

UI Design: As a HMH Product Designer, you create the design system to optimize the UX solutions to achieve a positive experience for the user. You work with your team to identify opportunities to meet teacher needs and improve student outcomes.

          You have experience with the content authoring tool and have created effective interactive contents for programs.

Interaction Design: As a HMH Product Designer, you drive innovation by contributing an understanding of emerging technologies and design trends, bring creative data-driven solutions, and develop integrated learning products and engaging experiences to optimize outcomes for our users.

  • Meaningful transitions, motion design, interactive interfaces                                          

          You understand how to guide users’ attention and communicate hierarchy, progress and achievement in an engaging and meaningful way.

          You are familiar with foundational front-end UI technical knowledge and understand how to articulate your design ideas to developers.

Visual Design: Your design solutions demonstrate functional simplicity, design consistency and a modern aesthetic. You contribute to the conceptualization and execution of design solutions that are discoverable, understandable and engaging to a wide range of users, from teachers to K-12 students–delivered across digital media.

  • Prototypes                                                                                                                         

          You understand multiple rapid prototyping methods, support the work of the UX wireframes, and can turn them into interactive flows. You can create prototypes for usability testing.

  • Design within Systems                                                                                                 

          You can work within a design system. You champion consistency, flexibility, and reuse. You understand and adhere to Atomic Design and pattern libraries. You develop and create standard UI components and style guides.

  • Print solutions                                                                                                               

          You can design and build from concept to final files print components within a digital program. You are acknowledgeable with font usage, are able to develop an art program through design elements and photos/illustrations, and   have a deep understanding of information architecture to create solutions that address product, marketing and business needs.

 

Project execution and operational efficiency:

An HMH Product Designer plays many roles during the course of a project:

  • Exercise ownership of assignments end-to-end to enable project completion to a high standard.
  • Collaborate across teams to leverage thinking and creativity to arrive at the best solutions.
  • Work within an Agile development model and work closely with stakeholders to plan development sprints and scrum teams.
  • Adjust nimbly to new developments and adjustments in project scope
  • Represent the efforts of the SIS team in a persuasive and compelling manner to stakeholder at meetings and reviews.
  • Understand production workflows for all digital media.
  • Document clear and precise design instructions for technical production teams, developers, external vendors, and Quality Assurance groups.
  • Provide support for ongoing professional development and innovation.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in design or design-related discipline (UID, visual design, IxD)
  • 2+ years highly interactive digital development with an emphasis on UI
  • Demonstrated application of UI, IxD and motion-graphics design heuristics
  • Portfolio with functional web UI and visual designs across desktop and mobile devices demonstrating an understanding of responsive design principles

 

Requirements

  • Understanding of multiple rapid prototyping techniques and wireframing
  • Understanding of UX/UI research processes and best practices for iterative development  
  • Adept at partnering with engineers to release features, products, and/or services
  • Excellent visual and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills
  • Understanding of Responsive Design principles and best practices
  • Experience in tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma (Preferred), Sketch, Zeplin, Principle and/or Invision for creating user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes and visual designs
  • Understanding of Design systems and repeatable patterns
  • Knowledge of WCAG and visual design accessibility standards for digital content
  • Basic understanding of HTML, CSS & other web technologies
  • Knowledge of User Centered Design principles and practices
  • Adept at presenting ideas confidently to other designers and stakeholders
  • Experience in Editorial Design and Educational Content development a plus
  • Experience working in Agile

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, et al
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
