The Opportunity:

  • The Software Engineer (UI) is a hands-on coding role; working as a member of a cross-functional team; alongside other Developers, Designers and Quality Engineers, within an Agile development environment.
  • We are working on the development of next-generation e-Learning solutions using the latest in Web technologies.
  • You will be responsible for designing, implementing and supporting front-end applications. Your focus will be on our next-generation eLearning platform "Ed" and on the delivery of student-facing, interactive, learning experiences.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the technical delivery of component design, development and maintenance
  • Work collaboratively within a cross-functional, agile development team to solve problems, deliver incrementally, transfer knowledge and contribute to overall product architecture
  • Adopt an Operational Excellence approach to continuous improvement - test, analyse data and improve constantly
  • Understand HMH goals around quality and Engineering discipline, participate in code reviews at the team level
  • Communicate progress clearly and concisely to the development team


Knowledge & Experience:

  • 3+ years UI/software development experience and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field is preferred
  • Proficiency in developing Node JS services and Web Applications in JavaScript (mandatory)
  • Proven proficiency in developing Web Applications in JavaScript with a focus on ECMAScript 6 language features
  • Working understanding of popular JavaScript design patterns (e.g. Module, Prototype, Observer, Singleton)
  • Experience with one or more JavaScript frameworks a plus (e.g. Node JS, Koa, Express, React, Angular, Vue)
  • Experience working with one or more test APIs; Jest, Jasmine, Mocha, Chai, Karma, Cucumber JS, Gherkin
  • Exposure to Unit testing frameworks
  • A solid understanding of the software development lifecycle and tools including Source Control, Rapid Prototyping, Continuous Integration
  • Aware of Accessibility, Internationalization and Security criteria for modern Web development - distinct advantage
