Want to inspire the thinkers and doers of tomorrow?

HMH is a learning company. We design and build our educational learning platform, Ed Learning, to make a positive, lifelong impact to millions of students and teachers lives. Delivering Ed Learning to over 53 million users, means our technology must be performant and provide a great user experience.

The architecture team plays a critical role in the design and rollout of the technologies and services that enable us to deliver this.

We are looking for a strong Technology Leader who can effectively manage a team of experienced architects and has a track record of contributing to an organisation's technology roadmap and improving their engineering practices.

This Director of Architecture role will work very closely with our Chief Architect, our engineering, UX and product teams in Dublin and the US as well as our external partners.

Overall responsibilities:

As a technology leader you will:

  • Be involved in developing the architectural vision and effective management and prioritisation of the architectural roadmap to align with the overall engineering delivery goals.
  • As part of this you will need to develop a strong understanding of the key product and enterprise systems.
  • Be involved in highly technical discussions and architectural solutions. This will require you, at times, to take a calm and pragmatic approach to help build a consensus whilst also being able to step back and consider the strategic implications of these decisions.
  • Use your excellent communications skills to interface with multiple stakeholders on an on-going basis.
  • Build strong relationships and be seen as a trusted advisor to engineering and product leadership.
  • Work closely with product and application teams in technology evaluation, selection, recommendation and configuration.
  • Contribute to on-going improvements in our engineering and agile & lean practices.

As a people manager you will:

  • Manage, support, and inspire a team of experienced architects and engineers.
  • Enable and empower your team to do their best work in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation and fosters development and learning.
  • Mentor and motivate your direct reports towards their career goals and actively develop your team’s skillset.
  • Be an active contributor to and participant in both company and site-led initiatives.

Required skills & competencies & education:

  • 10+ years' experience in Software Engineering and Architecture.
  • 2+ years' leading an experienced technical team.
  • Experience working on large cross-team, cross-company initiatives, encompassing both product and enterprise systems.
  • Proven background in cloud technologies (AWS/Azure) and in designing and implementing scalable, elastic microservice based platforms. Cloud certification desirable.
  • Demonstrated software development experience with expertise in client-side technologies (React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS) and strong experience using Java, Spring Framework/Spring Boot, and web application technologies in a service-oriented architecture
  • Comprehensive experience and knowledge of APIs, UIs, infrastructure, data architecture, security, and emerging technologies.
  • Expert understanding of the agile development process and DevOps practices.
  • A BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a STEM field or equivalent experience.
