The Opportunity:

As a Software Engineering Manager for our Devops Team you will directly manage a group of 5 Senior Devops Engineers, fostering a healthy and productive technology culture. You have a background in Software Engineering and passion for people management.

The Engineering Manager engages in mentoring and career development of software engineers, promoting Devops best practices, as well as working with Software Development and Operations Teams to determine best solutions.

Engineering Managers are entrusted to partner to define the roadmap and the overall strategy and vision for your area of the business.

 

This is a People Manager position. To thrive in this role, you have.

  • Significant experience leading multiple Agile teams and managing influencing Software Engineers.
  • Understand the software development process and how their work contributes to the larger goals, know how to make that process better, one step at a time.
  • Experience working with a team on a large project, typically working with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Loves a hands-on approach and thinking with a Devops mindset/culture.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Drive your team towards timely execution often with competing priorities. Negotiate technical needs vs. new features and be a key contributor in defining the roadmap.
  • Translate the company’s strategic vision, align group’s work, and help individuals understand their impact on Devops Teams and HMH’s success.
  • Mentor and motivate direct reports towards their career goals and actively develop your team’s skillset and put together a deep bench through proactive conversations, goal settings, and performance evaluations.
  • Work with Devops team to tease out implementation details and identify roadblocks before they occur.
  • Work with Product Owners and scrum teams to execute Agile release plans.
  • Actively monitor project risks and scope to foresee and identify potential problems and proactively identify solutions to address them.
  • Produce agile artifacts - stories, backlogs, burn down charts.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate cross team dependencies with other Delivery Leads.
  • Assess the Agile/Scrum maturity of the team and organization and coaching the team to higher levels of sustainability and continuous improvement.

 

As a people manager you will:

  • Manage, support, and inspire a team of experienced Devops Engineers.
  • Enable and empower your team to do their best work in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation and fosters development and learning.
  • Mentor and motivate your direct reports towards their career goals and actively develop your team’s skillset.
  • Be an active contributor to and participant in both company and site-led initiatives.
