The Product Marketing Director for ELD and Supplemental ELA is responsible for establishing the customer-centric vision that translates into strategies for engaging key market segments in the programs in his or her portfolio. This vision evolves through skilled collaboration across functional groups, including Executive Marketing Leadership, Product Management and Strategy, Learning Architecture, Market Intelligence, Creative teams in the agency, and Sales. 


The Director's ultimate goal is to convert mind share into market share, utilizing strategies that capture customer interest, transform interest into engagement, and convert engagement into buying behaviors. Developing winning strategies will rely on possessing a keen interest in the English learner and literacy markets (EL curricula, leveled readers, classroom libraries, writing, foundational skills), commitment to an ongoing study of the markets, and leveraging market intelligence, industry research, and customer engagement in order to develop compelling marketing resources.


The candidate for this position will utilize creative tactics across marketing channels, with a strong focus on content marketing, skillfully developing engaging messaging that speaks directly to the market, and tailoring messaging to key market segments.


A second requirement of this position is the ability to work closely with sales leadership and appointed Account Executives, in order to conceptualize and develop selling tools that motivate and empower the sales force to aggressively promote the programs in this portfolio.


The Product Marketing Director also works in a leadership capacity, generously supporting all levels of product marketing managers on his or her team through ongoing dialogue, skillful questioning that drives thoughtful, strategic planning, by offering frequent constructive feedback, and by establishing a system of accountability that helps ensure success in reaching established goals.

Key Responsibilities: 


-Owns the programs in the ELD and Supplemental ELA portfolio, serving as their ambassador and driver to both internal (sales) and external customers, while supporting his or her team in conceptualizing and contributing to compelling, high-impact go-to-market strategies that are grounded in customer needs and the problems they are driven to solve. 


-Works with his or her team to develop and maintain innovative marketing campaigns to drive demand. Committed to using creative, customer-centric messaging to drive customer awareness and engagement with his or her programs across channels, including advertising, website, eCampaigns, social media, online and print collateral, thought leadership content, and conferences. 


-Utilizes formal and informal professional development and associated tools to understand target audiences and KPIs that are intrinsic to strategic marketing practices.  Uses and reports data to gauge effectiveness in order to make well-informed strategic and tactical decisions. 


-Represents EL/ELD and Supplemental ELA products as a Subject Matter Expert when collaborating with or training cross-functional teams, especially sales. Partners with Product Management & Strategy in responding to Sales’ needs.


-Works to connect marketing strategies to enhancing and extending core programs when appropriate, implementing cohesive and consistent messaging that enhances programs' messages for cross-selling opportunities.


-Serves as a strategic and creative lead to new program launch plans, and takes the lead in driving them forward, including the customer-centric, creative messaging that is successful in compelling customers to look more closely and engage in buying behaviors.

Education Level and/or Relevant Experience


-Requires BS/BA in related disciplines with 7+ years of related industry, teaching/school leader, or functional experience. 

-Preferred: 8 years' experience, M.A., M.S., M.B.A, or M.Ed.; Proficiency in Spanish


Knowledge and Skills


-At least 7 years' experience as an educator focused on literacy or intervention, and/or at least seven years' experience in educational or similar publishing, within marketing, sales, editorial, consulting, or product management roles. Should be adept at developing, understanding, and evaluating KPIs with an eye on the Sales’ goals that the team supports.


-Exemplary oral and written communication skills, including the ability to persuasively present programs to multiple internal and external stakeholders.


-Self-starter: Driven to achieving goals, anticipates needs and takes ownership, exhibits deep understanding of the pedagogy behind assigned programs, market needs and challenges faced by the language and literacy customers (students and educators), and is able to translate this understanding into customer-centric marketing strategies and deliverables.


-Independent thinker with leadership skills grounded in diplomatic communication and solid collaboration skills.


-Creative, a problem solver who is flexible and solutions-oriented


-Able to prioritize and establish direction with direct reports based on marketing objectives


-Proficient in Word, Excel and Powerpoint


Other Requirements:

Travel required at least 15 times per year, possibly more during intensive periods of training, planning meetings, or campaigns. Ability to manage multiple objectives, projects, and demands within tight timelines and budgetary restrictions. 


Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing) for 4+ hours.
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
