WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Developer I supports and builds digital-first solutions that help teachers and students succeed. Working as part of a collaborative Agile Scrum team, this person contributes to the development of web-based applications and digital learning experiences on HMH's teaching and learning platform.

This role is a great fit for someone with a solid foundation in web development who enjoys problem-solving and is eager to grow their skills in a real-world product environment. With guidance from more experienced team members, the Developer I turns requirements into working digital solutions and takes pride in delivering experiences that genuinely delight users.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

(weighting may flex by business need)

1) Digital Product Development — 45%

• Contribute to the development and support of web applications and digital learning experiences using JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, and React.
• Help define and implement technical solutions for digital products on HMH's teaching and learning platform.
• Build and adapt digital assets — including code, media, audio, video, and metadata — optimized for a digital-first experience.
• Deliver features that meet market and user needs, bringing creative thinking to how problems are solved.
• Translate product and UX requirements into functional, polished digital experiences with guidance from senior team members.

2) API & Service Integration — 20%

• Work with RESTful APIs, JSON, and XML to connect features and services across HMH platforms.
• Support integrations with backend services using Node.js or Python as needed.
• Troubleshoot issues across integrated tools and services and contribute to resolving them.

3) Quality, Accessibility & Standards — 15%

• Apply UX best practices and responsive design principles in all development work.
• Maintain awareness of accessibility (WCAG), localization, performance, and security standards for web development.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to maintain quality and consistency.
• Support ongoing maintenance activities including bug fixes, updates, and incremental improvements.

4) Agile Team Participation — 10%

• Actively participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, story-pointing, and retrospectives.
• Work flexibly across teams and disciplines, adapting to shifting priorities and new challenges.
• Contribute ideas and solutions — not just tasks — to the team's delivery process.

5) Emerging Technology & Innovation — 10%

• Show curiosity and willingness to explore AI-assisted tools, prototypes, and new development approaches.
• Assist in experimenting with and integrating emerging capabilities that enhance digital learning experiences.
• Apply a data-informed mindset, using platform insights and user feedback to improve solutions.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Technical Skills

• Foundational proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, and React.
• Familiarity with web component frameworks (e.g., ReactJS, Web Components, NodeJS) and popular JavaScript libraries.
• Basic understanding of RESTful APIs, JSON, and XML.
• Awareness of UX best practices and responsive design principles.
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows.
• Understanding of the software development lifecycle, including testing, debugging, and source control.
• Awareness of accessibility, localization, and security standards for web development.

Preferred / Nice to Have

• Exposure to backend development using Node.js or Python.
• Experience working on an Agile team or within sprint-based delivery.
• Familiarity with AI tools, APIs, or emerging development workflows.
• Experience integrating third-party services or platforms.

Education & Experience

• 2-4 years of relevant development experience, including internships, academic projects, or equivalent hands-on work.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent technical training/certification.
