Software Engineering at HMH is focused on building fantastic software to meet the challenges facing teachers and learners, enabling and supporting a wide range of next generation learning experiences. We design and build custom applications and services used by millions. We are creating teams full of innovative, eager software professionals to build the products that will transform our industry.
This is a dual-stack role for a hands-on senior engineer who can move comfortably between our .NET microservices platform and Java-based integration work for our marketing/content technology stack, building both backend services and the front ends that sit on top of them. It suits an engineer who genuinely maintains both skill sets, not someone primarily strong in one who has ‘touched’ the other.
If you want to make a difference in the lives of students and teachers and understand what it takes to deliver high quality software, we would love to talk to you about this opportunity.
Technology Stack
You'll work with technologies such as C#, ASP.NET Core/MVC, Java/Spring Boot, Web API, Microservices, Maven or Gradle, Angular or React, Azure or AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Craft CMS (or an equivalent CMS), Elasticsearch, MySQL/SQL Server/PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Jenkins etc.
This will be a hands-on coding role working as part of a cross-functional team alongside other developers, designers and quality engineers, within an agile development environment, spanning both our core .NET platform and our Java-based content/MarTech integration layer.
About the role:
- You'll design, build, and own features across both the .NET microservices platform and the Java-based MarTech/content integration layer, as priorities require
- You'll build front-end components (Angular or React) for both areas of the stack
- You'll possess strong coding capabilities, problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate enthusiastically, clearly and concisely to other engineers within the larger team as well as with other HMH functional teams
- Our Software Engineers personify the notion of constant improvement as they work with their team to build software that delivers on our mission to improve student outcomes
- You're not afraid to try new things even if they don't work out as expected
- You are independent, self-directed, high energy and as eager to contribute to your team as you are to progress on your own path to software craftsmanship
- You'll thrive working in a fast-paced, low friction environment where you'll be exposed to a wide range of cutting-edge technologies
Responsibilities:
- You'll deploy and operate services on Azure or AWS, including CI/CD pipeline ownership
- You'll build and maintain REST/webhook integrations with key marketing and content SaaS platforms (Craft CMS, Marketo/Eloqua, Bynder/Orange Logic, Sprinklr, ON24, Wistia, OneTrust, Elasticsearch)
- You'll initiate and manage code reviews across both codebases; help keep engineering standards consistent regardless of which stack a piece of work touches
- You'll make pragmatic calls on which stack a new capability should live in, in consultation with engineering leadership
- You'll mentor other engineers and contribute to architecture decisions spanning both ecosystems
- You'll work collaboratively within a cross-functional, agile development team to solve problems, transfer knowledge and contribute to overall product architecture
Skills & Experience:
- 8+ years' experience in software development, with demonstrable, current hands-on depth in both C#/ASP.NET Core and Java/Spring Boot — not just exposure to one of them in the past
- Genuine full stack experience: hands-on with a modern front-end framework (Angular or React)
- Practical experience deploying and operating workloads on Azure or AWS
- Experience with architectural concepts such as microservices and separation of concerns, applied across more than one backend ecosystem
- Experience integrating third-party SaaS platforms via REST/SOAP APIs and webhooks; working knowledge of at least one CMS (Craft CMS or equivalent)
- Experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD tooling
- Experience with Database and Caching technologies such as MySQL/SQL Server, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis
- Experience in Test Driven Development and automated testing tools (NUnit/JUnit, Selenium, Cucumber, SonarQube)
Good to Have:
- Experience with message brokers or event streaming such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Azure Service Bus
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/ARM/Bicep) and security fundamentals (OAuth2/OIDC, secrets management)
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) in a day-to-day coding workflow
Required Education:
- Degree or master’s in computer science or relevant discipline OR relevant work experience
- Any Java Certification for Example OCP (Oracle Certified Professional) like Java SE 17 Developer or Foundational C# Certification
